Difference Between Yarn and Wool (With Table)

The basic needs for the existence of human life are food, shelter, and clothing. Clothing is the clothes that we wear to protect us from scorching sun heat to the shivering winters. These clothes are made from fibers or threads. Thread is a type of yarn, and wool is a fiber. We normally consider that fibers and yarns are the same things. But that’s wrong, so here are some basic differences between yarn and wool.

<span class=\"

Wool is a natural fiber that is extracted from the fleece of sheep and other animals. Animal fiber is very popular all over the world for its warmth. It is mainly used to make winter garments like sweaters, mufflers, etc. it is also known as protein fiber because wool is made up of a protein called keratin. Wool has different textures depending on which part of the body of the sheep it is sheared from.

India secures the second position in the global production of cotton yarn.

India secures the ninth position in the production of wool.

What is Yarn?

Yarn is made by spinning fibers together. These are the long lengths of fibers interlocked together to develop a strong, durable strand of yarn. Yarns are made from both natural and synthetic fibers. Natural yarns are made from both plant and animal fiber. One of the most popular natural fibers is cotton, and animal fiber is wool.

Synthetic yarns such as nylon, polyester are made from polymers obtained from oil and chemicals. Yarns are used for weaving, knitting, sewing, and also rope making. Ropes are normally made from natural yarns for their strength and durability. Synthetic ropes made from synthetic yarns are slippery for their ultra-smooth texture.

Yarns are further classified into two types: staple and filament yarns. Staple yarns are made from long fibers. These long continuous fibers are spun to make staple yarns. Filament yarns are made from short-length fibers. Short-length fibers are spun to make filament yarns. If staple yarn strands are cut into pieces, they will be called filament yarn.

The word ‘yarn’ is derived from the Old English word garn, meaning string. The yarn is mainly used by textile industries for making fabrics. These fabrics undergo knitting, sewing, and weaving and come to the markets as the garments we buy. India has secured the second position in the production of cotton yarn globally.

What is Wool?

Wool is a natural fiber extracted from the fleece of sheep and other animals. It is also called a protein fiber, as wool is made up of a type of protein called keratin. It is excessively famous all over the world because of its property of providing warmth. The most famous types of wool are alpaca, cashmere, merino, and angora.

Natural fibers like these are very soft, comfortable, slightly elastic, they are very breathable, and do not need high maintenance. There are some steps to convert fleece to woolen textiles. The fleece is firstly sheared from the animal, and then they undergo grading and sorting depending on the part of the sheep the wool is sheared.
