Difference Between Omega 3 and Fish Oil

Omega 3 vs Fish Oil

Some food substances are very healthy in the body system while others are very harmful and carcinogenic. Grilled foods and the black, grilled part in that meat is one of the leading causes of stomach cancer. Too high of an intake of grilled food in the lifetime may predispose us to stomach cancer. Other cancer-causing foods are foods high in fat that, in the long run, may cause colon cancer.

We are always warned and educated. However, some people cannot force their palate to remove these foods. These unhealthy foods may cause us unwanted illnesses and cancer in the near future. Two of the healthy food components that we must consume are omega 3 and fish oil. Let us tackle the differences.

Fish oil is an oil while omega 3 is a fatty acid. Both are different in terms of structure and components.

Omega 3 fatty acid is a fat that is a particularly polyunsaturated type. It has three forms such as ALA, EPA, and DHA. DHA and EPA can be found in fish such as cods, sardines, etc. ALA, on the other hand, can be derived from vegetable oils like canola oil or soybean oil. ALA can also be derived from walnuts and flaxseeds.

Fish oil, on the other hand, is an oil itself that is produced from the fish’s fats and tissues. However, it only contains DHA and EPA but not ALA. Fish actually are not producers of omega 3. These fish acquire it by eating prey fish and microalgae that contains omega 3 fatty acids.

Both fish oil and omega 3 are beneficial to humans. It lowers blood cholesterol thus preventing atherosclerosis. It also lowers hypertension, reduces triglycerides which means it lowers the risks of stroke and heart attack. Overall, it lowers the risk for cardiovascular disease which is one of the leading causes of death around the globe. The components of fish oil and the omega 3 fatty acid themselves act as anti-inflammatories as well. Thus, it can improve one’s memory and mental capacities.

The American Heart Association recommends the dosage of one gram of fish oil per day by eating fish. Or, if not, we can take supplements.
