Difference Between Cream of Wheat and Grits

Cream of Wheat vs Grits

Man cannot survive without food, a preparation or substance that provides living beings the nutrients they need for survival. Food comes from plants and animals that contain proteins, fat, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates which are essential for growth and strength.
When food is ingested, it is broken down and distributed to the cells of the body to be converted into energy giving nutrients to stimulate the body’s growth and strengthen it for survival. There are many plants that can provide the nutrients that the body needs.
Grains are the staple food for most people. Grains can come from a variety of plants, such as, barley, rice, corn, and wheat. They form as bases for most of the food consumed by people. Wheat can be ground and made into bread or porridge, and corn can also be eaten on the cob or ground to produce grits to make porridge.
In 1893, wheat millers in North Dakota created a porridge called Cream of Wheat. It is usually eaten at breakfast and is made by adding ground wheat to boiling water and stirring until it is thick. Some can also be prepared by having the ground wheat set in hot water for a few minutes. For added creaminess, milk can also be added to the mixture. It is also advised to add fruits, nuts, and sugar to Cream of Wheat. Any food can be mixed with it which can result in distinctive flavors that are good to the taste.
Grits, on the other hand, is a porridge that is also prepared for breakfast. It is made with ground corn which is cooked in water until it thickens. It is a Native American food that is very popular especially for those who need soft food. Everywhere in the world, people are consuming grits, and it is known in different names, such as, polenta. Early grits were made by using a stone mill, but today they are ground by machines in corn mills. Aside from preparing it as porridge, it can also be fried in butter or oil.
Although both come from grains, they have different tastes and textures. Grits are coarser and can be eaten with other foods like eggs. Cream of Wheat is creamier and, therefore, more suitable to make porridge.
