Difference Between Flop and Commercial Failure

Flop vs. Commercial Failure

Flops and commercial failures are terms that are used when something that has been introduced in the market has failed. Most of the time people spend a lot of money in advertising for promoting their products. Some of these endeavors flop or end in a commercial failure. The two terms may be a bit confusing for the common man, and most of the time they use it interchangeably. But the fact is that there are subtle differences between the two.

What is a commercial failure? It means that the product may not have brought in money for the producer but it might have sold well.

So what then is a flop? It means that the manufacturer has not lost any money from the product.

For example, a movie may not be considered a flop if it has gotten good acclaim from the audience and the critics. But these films could be termed as commercial failures if the film did not bring in substantial money for the persons who produced it. A commercial failure is where the financial returns were not gotten but where recognition could have been gotten.

A movie may not be considered a commercial failure as it might have brought in money for the producers, but it might be considered a flop if the audience and the critics did not acclaim it. So here the film was a financial success but not endorsed by the audience and the critics.

Let us look at another example which can help clarify the differences between a commercial flop and a commercial failure. If a pop singer is called to a foreign country, and if many people do not turn out at the show, then the show is a flop. And if the promoter has not sold enough tickets for the show, it could be a commercial failure as he might have lost money.
