What is Biotin

Biotin is vitamin B7. This vitamin is involved in many metabolic processes in humans and in many organisms. It is primarily useful for the utilization of fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids. This term comes from the Greek word “bios” which refers to the meaning, “to live”.

Figure 01: The Chemical Structure of Biotin

Concerning the chemical properties of biotin, the chemical formula of biotin is C10H16N2O3 S. The molar mass of the substance is 244.31 g/mol. It appears as white crystalline needles. It is a heterocyclic, sulfur-containing monocarboxylic acid having two ring structures fused with each other through their sides.

When synthesizing in plants, it is an essential component for plant growth. Bacteria also can synthesize this vitamin. The synthesis of biotin initiates with two precursors: alanine and pimeloyl-CoA. First, a KAPA compound is formed, which is then transported from plant peroxisome to mitochondria. There, it converts into DAPA which in turn converts into biotin. This final step is catalyzed by biotin synthase.

The most animal common sources of biotin include chicken liver, beef liver, egg white, salmon, pork chop, turkey breast, etc. while peanuts, sunflower seeds, sweet potato, broccoli, etc. are the plant sources. Moreover, this vitamin is stable at room temperature and does not destroy when heating during cooking. This substance is also available as dietary supplements and as an ingredient in multivitamins.

What is Biotin Forte?
