Lower the frequency, higher the fitness, leading to a balanced polymorphism. Fitness of a phenotype decreases as it becomes more common. Therefore rare phenotypes show higher fitness and are favoured by the selection. This negative frequency-dependent selection leads to a balanced polymorphism.
