Difference Between LCD and TFT Technology

Liquid Crystal Display or LCD is a technology which is used to display electronic visuals on a thin and flat screen that uses light modulating properties of Liquid Crystals. The LCD technology does not emit the light directly. LCD technology finds its large uses in a variety of applications such as computer monitors, television, aircraft cockpit displays and much more areas. LCD technology has been in use at devices of common use such as Video Players, Clocks, Watches, and Calculators etc. LCD technology does not make use of phosphors which means there won’t be any image burn-in. LCD technology is an energy efficient technology which offers safer disposal as compared to CRT technology. The LCD Technology makes use of less electrical power which allows it to be used in equipments that use battery for their working. The LCD technology allows using a number of pixels with liquid crystals arrayed in front of a reflector for production of images that are colored or monochrome. LCD technology has taken over the CRT technology which is evident from the fact that the number of devices made using LCD technology are greater in usage as compared to products that are made by the help of CRT technology.

The TFT technology or Thin Film Transistor technology is a variant of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) which makes use of the Thin Film Transistor Technology which improves the quality of image as compared to the simple Liquid Crystal Display Technology. TFT is not a technology which is separate from LCD but it is an evolved version of the LCD technology. Instead of making use of the wafers, TFT technology makes use of continuous layer of liquid crystal with a separate layer of color filter glass for controlling color as electric current passes between TFT glass and color filter glass. Work on TFT technology started in 1960s till 1980 but these were only made applicable in year 2002 when the costs of TFT technology reached low level making it ideal for application in various displaying devices.

In the older technology of displaying through LCD, the signals which were sent to separate pixels got confused with signals that went to surrounding pixels resulting in image blurs and other problems. The TFT technology has reduced this problem as crossed signals did not affect the quality of display. The quality of image was increased allowing TFT-LCD to take advantage over simple LCD technology. The response time of LCD technology was also an issue. The low response time allows producing quick, clear image which moves smoothly while high response time causes blurs and reduces quality of fast motion on screens. The response time for TFT is less than that of LCD making it better for viewing objects in motion. The fluid can change more easily and makes screen suitable to watch action movies and sports events without any blur or decrease in quality. LCD display uses transistor for creation of image while TFT is a method of creating a LCD. TFT produces better display quality-wise as compared to the image of LCD. All LCD displays are using TFT technology these days for better results.
