Due to the presence if this lone electron pair, the bond angle of the molecule is 107°. Since there are N-H bonds, the molecule can form hydrogen bonds. Moreover, boiling aqueous ammonia easily emits ammonia gas due to its low boiling point.

What is Ammonium Nitrate?

Ammonium nitrate is an inorganic compound having the chemical formula NH4NO3. It is a salt containing ammonium cation and nitrate anion. Ammonium nitrate appears as a white solid at room temperature and easily dissolves in water. Moreover, it occurs as a natural mineral in nature.

  • Appears as a white or grey solid.
  • Melting point is 169.6 °C.
  • Above 210 °C, it decomposes.

Apart from that, we can use it in producing explosive mixtures for mining and quarrying purposes.
