Difference Between Astronaut and Cosmonaut

Astronaut

Astronaut vs. Cosmonaut

Astronaut and cosmonaut are terms that are related to the space flight program. They almost have the same meaning as far as their profession is concerned, but there are some noticeable differences.  It is because of the space race that the words astronaut and cosmonaut were created. The Russians use the word “cosmonaut,” and the Americans use the word “astronaut.”

Astronauts have to pilot the spacecraft and also do servicing. This means that an astronaut should be adept in servicing and also in commanding the spacecraft. Astronauts have a good understanding of life in space and also a human being’s relationship to space. On the contrary, a cosmonaut has to work outside the Earth’s atmosphere. It can be said that when an astronaut leaves the Earth’s atmosphere, he or she will automatically become a cosmonaut.

Both “cosmonaut” and “astronaut” have been derived from the Greek language. “Cosmonaut” is a term that is derived from a combination of the Russian word “kosmo” and the Greek word “nautes.”

“Astronaut” is a word that comes from the Greek word “astro” and “nautes.” “Astro” means “star,” and “nautes” means “sailor.” The word “astronaut” was first seen in Neil R. Jones’s short story “The Death’s Head Meteor.” It has been said that “astronaut” has been influenced by the word “aeronaut” which was an older word that referred to an air traveler.

The criteria for selecting cosmonauts and astronauts differ. The astronauts have to be young and not older than 40 years of age. They should also have a height less than 5’11.” An astronaut should have a B.S. degree and a graduation from the military test pilot school. They should also have at least 1,500 hours of flight time. The candidates also have to undergo extensive psychological tests.

They should be younger than 30 years of age and have a height less than 5’7.” They should be military officers and have graduated from the Soviet Air Force. A candidate should also have 900 hours of flight time. Just like astronauts, the cosmonauts also have to undergo psychological tests.
