Celexa vs. Lexapro
Celexa and Lexapro are common medications that are used to treat the symptoms of depression in patients who are exhibiting serious symptoms. Both medications are prescriptions issued by a doctor that inhibit the process of serotonin re-uptake. Chemically, they are both very similar in ingredients, however there are important differences between the two and they cannot be used interchangeably, therefore it is important to disclose all medication that you are taking to your doctor before you are given a prescription. Claims by patients seem to lead to the belief that if one of the two medications works for you the other will not, and vice versa.
Both prescriptions should be kept in cool, dry areas that are out of reach of any children, as accidental overdose can cause severe damage and even coma. These medications should not be used if you are going to operate machinery or vehicles. Also, they can be harmful if you are pregnant or nursing. Both medications are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Celexa is also known as citalopram hydrobromide. One of the greatest benefits of being prescribed Celexa is that there is a generic prescription available for purchase which can save the patient money. This drug comes in tablet form and can take up to 4 weeks for a person to feel the effects of the medication. Some of the side effects can include sweating, dry mouth, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. The worst side effects are rarer but include hallucinations and seizures. Celexa is a serious drug and should be taken with caution.
Lexapro is known as escitalopram hydrobromide. Lexapro is very similar to Celexa, however it has the benefit of also being able to treat anxiety problems. But unlike Celexa, there is no generic form of Lexapro. Lexapro comes as both a tablet or in liquid form and it also can take up to 4 weeks before it becomes effective in the system of a patient. Symptoms of this medication include vomiting, dry mouth, tiredness, heartburn, and diarrhea. Some feel the side effects of Lexapro are easier than Celexa, as there has not been a link to seizures. However, patients can still experience hallucinations, severe muscle stiffness, and unusual excitement.
While both these medications are meant to treat the same neural problems within the brain, they still have some important differences as to why a doctor may issue one over the other.
