Difference Between DBZ and DBZ Kai

DBZ vs. DBZ Kai

In kids’ entertainment, anime has revolutionized the world of cartoons. With their higher level of detail, higher definition of display and precisely constructed themes, anime have become the preferred entertainment for kids worldwide. However, many famous cartoons have maintained their popularity despite the growing trend of watching anime. DBZ and DBZ Kai are also examples of two anime that have become extremely popular amongst kids; to an extent that their profits not only come from viewership but also from extraordinary amounts of sales of merchandise.

DBZ, which is short for Dragon Ball Z, is a Japanese anime TV series that was produced by Toei Animation. It follows Dragon Ball anime as its sequel. Moreover, it has adapted the last 325 chapters of the 519 chapter original Dragon Ball manga series that was created by Akira Toriyama, which was published between 1988 and 1995 in the Weekly Shonen Jump. Dragon Ball Z was aired for the very first time on Fuji Television in Japan on the 25th of April 1989. It was aired right up till the 31st of January 1996 and was then dubbed in a number of languages so as to be broadcasted around the world. The countries in which it spread every quickly and soon became popular include the United States, Latin America, Australia, India and a number of European countries. Dragon Ball Z Kai or just Dragon Ball Kai is also an anime series that is a remastered and a recut version of Dragon Ball Z. The change was introduced on the 20th anniversary of Dragon Ball Z and the Kai version was released as a high definition anime TV series. It premiered on Fuji TV on April 5th, 2009. After completing 98 episodes, it ended on the 25th of August in 2011. It was marketed together with One Piece which followed it on TV after its episode ended. The series was well received by its audience and had an average rating of 9.4%. Its maximum rating was 12.3% (for episode number 47) whereas its lowest rating was 6.4% (for episode number 18). Later in 2014, on April 6th to be precise, Dragon Ball Z returned to Japanese Television with Majin Buu Saga.

Apart from the fact that DBZ Kai followed DBZ, there are plenty of differences between the two. When DBZ was being produced for the very first time, the producers were not far behind the creation of manga (that later became the storyline for DBZ Kai). A lot of filler material was created so as to allow the author time to come up with ideas. Most of this is quite hilarious. DBZ Kai has less of this filler material and a greater focus on the main story. Therefore, the story progresses more naturally and that too in fewer episodes.

The animation in DBZ and DBZ Kai is more or less the same although the only animation that can be noted in Kai is in the intro and the outro songs as well as before and after commercial breaks. There is also difference in colour and sharpness.
Both the series are available in Blu-ray although DBZ is quite cheaper because it has been out longer than DBZ Kai.
