People make use of many fragrances on their skin and clothes to rid themselves of body odor and other types of smells. For men particularly, there are fragrances as after-shave solutions, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne (or simply cologne) to apply to feel confident about themselves. Many men cannot make a difference between Eau de Toilette and Cologne and make use of these products interchangeably. However, they find that there are differences in the duration for which these products linger on skin, their price, as well as the concentration of oils used. Let us find out those differences in this article.
Eau de Toilette
As the name implies, it is a product used to put on one’s body after taking a bath. Men also apply it on their facial skin after shaving. This is a toilet water containing lots of alcohol and a fragrance that is weak perfume. Splashed over the body right after taking bath, Eau de Toilette makes sure there are no body odors troubling you even after long hours at the office. Eau de Toilette is also called EdT simply, and it contains 5-15% of aromatic oils for fragrance. In general, this percentage is kept around 10.
Eau de Cologne (or Cologne)
Having originated from an area called Cologne in Germany, this toilet product full of fragrance and freshness is applied on the skin, to get rid from body odor and to feel fresh and fragrant all the time. Eau de Cologne has a base of alcohol with aromatic oils to the tune of 2-5%. This means the fragrance of cologne does not last long. Cologne lies at the bottom end of the perfumes available in the market depending upon the percentage of aromatic oils.
What is the difference between Eau De Toilette and Cologne?
• Both eau de Toilette, as well as Cologne, are used by people on their skin, to get rid of body odors and feel fresh for long hours.
• The basic difference in Eau de Toilette (called toilet water) and Cologne lies in their composition where eau de Toilette contains a higher percentage of aromatic compounds.
• Aromatic oils (called essential oils) in eau de Toilette are to the tune of 5-15% whereas their percentage in Cologne is around 2-5% only.
• Eau de Toilets are thus costlier than Colognes.
• Eau de Colognes can be applied directly on skin again as it evaporates and the fragrance also does not last for more than 2 hours.
• Cologne originated in Germany.
• The higher the concentration of juices (essential oils) in a toiletry, the higher is its longevity on skin. This is why the fragrance of Eau de Toilette lasts longer than the fragrance of Cologne
• If you have an oily skin, your skin can hold the fragrance longer, and you can make do with Cologne. However, if you have a dry skin, you might need stronger Eau de Toilette.
