Usually, lagoons are not considered a part of the larger water body, but they are connected to it, making the water in it salty at the periphery. Conclusion
The terms estuary and lagoons are often used interchangeably as they are both places where freshwater meets the saltwater of the seas or oceans. However, they must not be confused from each other as estuaries are places the water freely mixes, whereas lagoons remain separated and hence form shallow freshwater systems.
