Difference Between Galaxy and Universe

Galaxy vs Universe

Galaxy, which can be called as a star cluster or a star system, is a system that is composed of stars, gas, asteroids, dust, and dark matter. A central force known as a black hole holds all these together. The universe consists of Earth and other celestial bodies in outer space. The solar system is part of the universe.

A galaxy is part of the universe. The universe has a wider concept than a galaxy as everything is included in it.

A galaxy ranges from giant, with trillions of stars, and dwarf with millions of stars. These stars are known to move around the mass in the center. There are many galaxies in outer space. Several theories state that there are many galaxies in outer space that we are not aware of as they are invisible.

When talking about the universe, it can be composed of anything around us. The Earth, energy, sky, galaxies, and everything that is seen around us comes under the term “universe.”

“Galaxy” is a term that has been taken from the Greek word “galaxias” that means “milk.” “Universe” is a word that has been derived from an Old French word “univers” which has been derived from the Latin word “universum” which means “turned into one.”

A galaxy comes in different shapes and sizes. In general, a galaxy has been divided into elliptical, spiral, barred spiral, and irregular.

As per the Big Bang Theory, the universe is known to have expanded from an extremely hot and dense phase known as Planck epoch. Ever since the Planck epoch, the universe has been expanding always. It is said that the universe has an age of 13.75 billion years.
