What is Gooch Crucible?
Gooch crucible is a type of filtration device we can use in laboratories. This instrument was named after Frank Austin Gooch. We can name it a Gooch filter as well. Gooch crucible is useful for collecting a precipitate directly within the vessel in which we can let the precipitate dry, make its ash and measure the weight of the analyte sample through gravimetric analysis.
Originally, this device was made as a standard platinum crucible in laboratories, and it contained a perforated base. This perforated base is important in placing the asbestos pulp from the filter mat. Thereafter, the crucible was heated in an oven in order to let the pulp dry until it obtained a constant weight that we can measure. This crucible can be subject to a high temperature for drying the filtrate, and we can also oxidize the content in the crucible or make the filtrate become its ash which has minimum weight. However, the use of platinum is expensive; thus, the material of the Gooch crucible was replaced with porcelain in 1882.
In some crucibles, there are asbestos double layers that separate them from a perforated porcelain plate. Additionally, some Gooch crucibles contain inorganic fibres such as glass in the place of asbestos. Gooch crucibles made of borosilicate glass and fritted glass bases are also common nowadays. Platinum Gooch crucibles also help in important applications like handling corrosive materials. In such applications, we cannot use porcelain. However, a Gooch crucible made of porcelain is enough for ashing a material at high temperature, and the crucibles made of borosilicate are enough for drying a material.
What is Sintered Glass Crucible
Sintered glass crucible is a type of filtration device made of Pyrex glass. Pyrex glass is an excellent resistant glass type. It is fitted with sintered ground glass, filter disc at a small distance above the lower end. Generally, this device is useful in directly collecting a precipitate that requires drying.
Moreover, these glass crucibles contain various degrees of porosity in order to suit precipitates of different sizes. There are two major types as G3 and G4; G3 is useful for most precipitates, whereas G4 is important in filtering few precipitate types. These crucible types cannot withstand temperatures above 400 Celsius degrees.
Furthermore, we cannot use a sintered glass crucible directly on a flame. Therefore, the precipitate in the sintered glass crucible is dried at temperatures ranging from 110 to 120 Celsius degrees inside an electric oven.
