Hillsong vs Hillsong United
Hillsong is a Pentecostal church that is affiliated with the Australian Christian Churches or the Australian Assemblies of God. It was started by Bob and Bobbie Houston in Baulkham Hills, Sydney, Australia in the year 1983.
The couple moved from New Zealand to Australia and joined a church pastored by Brian’s father, the Christian Life Centre. They later formed the Hills Christian Life Centre with a membership of only 45 people, and within 4 years it grew to several hundred.
The church was initially housed in a warehouse and later transferred to the Hills Centre. It has four main campuses located across Sydney and has several extension services in Australia and in other parts of the world. Its popularity grew from the popularity of Hillsong Music. Their songs and albums topped Australian charts and are well known all over the world.
Its name was changed to Hillsong Church in 1999, and the church merged with the Sydney Christian Life Centre. It is well known for its album sales, teachings, television program, and the Annual Hillsong Conference.
Hillsong United, on the other hand, is the youth ministry of Hillsong Church which is now called Hillsong Youth. It is comprised of four age groups namely:
Fuel for the 7th to 9th grade group.
Wildlife for the 10th to 12th grade group.
Powerhouse for the 18-25 age group.
Frontline for the 25 to 35 age group.
The youth group was formed when Hillsong Church was started in 1983 starting with the Wildlife and Powerhouse groups. The two groups get together on United Nights which formed the basis of the youth groups’ name, Hillsong United. In time, four groups were formed.
The Hillsong United youth ministry worship team started writing songs and released the album “Everyday” in 1999. Every year the group releases an album and travels around the world for tours and conferences.
Like all members of the Hillsong Church, Hillsong United members hold the belief in the Bible as accurate and authoritative regarding the Christian faith and that believers should be baptized in the Holy Spirit which enables them to speak in tongues among other spiritual gifts. They are also opposed to homosexuality and abortion.
The Hillsong Church is governed by a board of elders composed of seven members who are senior executive staff and business leaders. They are appointed and their positions are renewable after a year.
