Honda Accord vs. BMW 5 series
Over the years, carmakers have been jostling for the top spot in the competitive segment of the mid-sized sedan, to garner a large chunk of the market. This is why car comparisons exist, in order to weed out the lethargic ones from the best. But would it be unfair to compare a known luxurious brand, such as a BMW 5 series, against one which focuses mainly on reliability and value for money, such as a Honda Accord? Let’s find out by comparing both carmakers’ base models.
The Honda Accord has a 2.4L inline-4, which produces 177 horsepower at 6,500 RPM, and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. This thrifty engine has a fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon for city and highway driving. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for this model is $21,765.
The 5 Series of the BMW stable, comes in a 4-door, 5-passenger luxury sedan or sports sedan, or luxury wagon, available in 6 trims, ranging from the base 528i to the luxurious 550i. The base model BMW 528i, which costs $42,135, is equipped with a standard 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, with 24 valves that churns out a whopping 230-horsepower at 6500rpm , delivered through the rear wheels. This engine achieves a fuel efficiency of 21 mpg combined for both city and highway driving. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, although a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional.
Both cars offer 4-wheel ABS on all-disc brakes. In terms of curb weight, the Accord LX comes out in a slightly trimmer 3230 lbs., supported by 16-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 215/60 All-Season tires. The BMW 5 series, weighs in at 3505 lbs. for the manual transmission models, and 3571 lbs. for the ones which have automatic transmission. A size 225/50 tires over 17-inch wheels are standard equipment.
It must be noted though, that all these numbers are for the entry-level models only, for both car manufacturers. Things get a bit more upscale, more competitive and pricier as you go up the different trim levels. The Accord offers three different trim levels, namely, the base LX, the upgraded EX, and the top of the line EX-L, which offers premium features such as leather upholstery and an optional navigation system.
Meanwhile, the BMW 5 Series is available in sedan and wagon body styles, with three engines available that correspond to the three trim levels, which are as follows: A 230hp 3.0L inline-6 for the 528i and 528xi models; a 300hp 3.0L inline-6 for the 535i, 535xi, and 535xi Sports Wagon models; and a 360hp 4.8L V8 for the 550i model.
Now, if money was no object, luxury obviously wins this contest. So why choose the more opulent BMW 5 Series over the Honda Accord? It is an excellent choice for a midsize luxury car, because it offers a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. Not to mention, reputable quality German engineering. The only significant drawback for this vehicle is its price tag, which is where the Accord is triumphant. But then again, who cares if money was no object, right?
