Difference Between HRV and ERV

HRV ( Heat Recovery Ventilator ) vs ERV (Energy recovery ventilator)

HRV is Heat Recovery Ventilator and ERV is Energy Recovery Ventilator. Both the HRV and the ERV are energy revival system. Both these contain almost the same components such as heat exchangers, fans and also controls.

One of the main differences between Heat Recovery Ventilator and Energy Recovery Ventilator is in working of the heat exchangers. In ERV, the heat exchanger transmits some amount of water vapour along with the heat energy whereas only heat is transferred in Heat Recovery Ventilator.

Unlike the Heat Energy Recovery Ventilator, the Heat Recovery Ventilator is considered to be cost effective as they reclaim energy from the exhaust air slow. The HRVs recapture about 60 to 80 per cent of the temperature that would have been lost otherwise.

Energy Recovery Ventilator can also be called as a system that transfers moisture between two air streams. Energy Recovery Ventilators help in maintaining constant humidity during the winter season.

One can also come across difference in the equipment between Heat Recovery Ventilator and Energy Recovery Ventilator. In Heat Recovery Ventilator, there are two fans that helps in the balanced flow of incoming and outgoing air. They also consist of fixed filters through which the air flows.  Some of the Heat Recovery Ventilator comes with HEPA technology that captures the pollutants. The Energy Recovery Ventilator also has the same components but with the exception of an additional chamber for managing humidity levels.
