The mobile phone market changes at such a speed that one can’t intuitively keep a tab on what’s happening if he isn’t careful. Existing rivals come up with innovative new products with cutting edge technology. Others follow the footpaths of the giants and threaten the market penetration. Meanwhile, some new rivals are also emerged. More than dozens of products come to the market monthly and the competition is really heavy. For this reason, smartphones outdate in a blink. Only the smartphones with a unique value would remain in being to get to the hands of the customers after months. Here, we are going to compare one of those products against one of the products that come from a new rival.
It’s a generally accepted fact that Apple iPhone 4S is a unique product. This is not just because of its usability perspective, which we think is paralleled by rivals up to date, but because it’s the only device that features Apple iOS5 in it and that makes the product unique. On the other hand, the competitor we have today is Huawei Honor. It is from a new manufacturer to the market although not so new for the telecommunication industry. Honor also comes with cutting edge technology and we sure hope it would bring honor to the Huawei family.
Huawei Honor
The 11mm thick Huawei Honor comes in 6 colors, namely Glossy Black, Textured Black, Elegant White, Vibrant Yellow, Cherry Blossom Pink and Burgundy. It’s a rare incident that a smartphone comes in such a variety of colors, and the look and feel of Huawei Honor is pleasing, but at the same time, it doesn’t really look expensive. It comes with a 4.0 inches TFT Capacitive touchscreen featuring 854 x 480 resolution and a pixel density of 245ppi. It is also slightly larger than Apple iPhone 4S but weighs just the same. As far as we can tell, it comes with the default UI of Android without any tweaking at the Huawei end which may give rise to some misnomers.
Huawei Honor comes with a 1.4GHz Scorpion processor on top of Qualcomm MSM8225T chipset with Adreno 205 Graphics Unit. Unfortunately, the 512MB RAM seems like a less elegant touch, for this processor should deserve a 1GB RAM. The whole system is controlled by Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread while Huawei promises an upgrade to new IceCreamSandwich soon. It has 4GB internal storage with the option to expand it upto 32GB using a microSD card. Honor is well equipped with HSDPA connectivity for fast internet usage, and it also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity and the fact that it can act as a hotspot gives us an important use case. It also has DLNA that enables you to stream rich media content to your TV wireless.
Huawei has been cautions to port Honor with 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. The fact that is can perform HDR adds value to the camera. It is also capable of capturing 720p HD videos at 30 frames per second and comes with a 2MP camera on the front; also, bundled with Bluetooth v2.1 for the delight of the video callers. The camera also supports Geo-tagging with the help of A-GPS technology. It has accelerometer, Gyro sensor, proximity sensor and a digital compass which might come in handy. It also supports Java applications and features active noise cancellation mic and other generic Android features that add value to it. The standard 1900mAh battery in Huawei Honor promises a talk time of 10 hours, which is impressive.
Apple iPhone 4S
Apple iPhone 4S was launched with a big hype among the smartphone users. It has the same look and feel of iPhone 4 and comes in both black and white. The stainless steel built gives it an elegant and expensive style which appeals to the users. It also is almost the same size as iPhone 4 but slightly heavier weighing 140g. It features the generic Retina display which Apple is extremely proud of. It comes with a 3.5 inches LED-backlit IPS TFT Capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors, and scores the highest resolution as per Apple which is 640 x 960 pixels. The pixel density of 330ppi is extremely high that Apple claims that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. This obviously results in crisp text and stunning images.
iPhone 4S comes with 1GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU in Apple A5 chipset and 512MB RAM. Apple claims this delivers two times more power and seven times better graphics. It is also highly energy efficient which enables Apple to boast an outstanding battery life. iPhone 4S comes in 3 storage options; 16/32/64GB without the option of expanding the storage with a microSD card. In terms of camera, iPhone has an improved camera of 8MP that can record 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. It has a LED flash and touch to focus function along with Geo-tagging with A-GPS. The front VGA camera enables the iPhone 4S to make use of its application Facetime, which is a video calling application. For connectivity, it supports HSDPA at 14.4Mbps and HSUPA at 5.8Mbps.
While iPhone 4S is graced with generic iOS applications, it comes with Siri, the most advanced digital personal assistant up to date. Now the iPhone 4S user can use voice to operate the phone, and Siri understands natural language. It also understands what user meant, that is, Siri is a context aware application. It has its own personality, tightly coupled with the iCloud infrastructure. It can do basic tasks like setting up an alarm or reminder for you, sending a text or email, schedule meetings, follow your stock, make a phone call etc. It can also perform complex tasks like finding information for a natural language query, getting directions, and answering your random questions.
Apple is best known for its unbeatable battery life; thus, it would be normal to expect it to have a fabulous battery life. With the Li-Pro 1432mAh battery it has, iPhone 4S promises a talk time of 14h 2G and 8h 3G. Recently the users have been making complaints about the battery life and Apple has announced that it is working on a fix for that, while their update for iOS5 has partially solved the problem. We can stay tuned for updates and expect the Technological Innovator to come up with a fix for the problem at hand soon.

Conclusion
Once a friend asked how to decide which handset is better than which in an objective manner. I told him, as I’m telling you; that isn’t an easy task, or to be frank, it’s almost impossible because there’s certain subjectivity involved. It further becomes an exhaustive task if one has to choose a handset from a pool of handsets. Fortunately, it is only two handsets we are comparing here and here goes the almost objective conclusion. Apple iPhone 4S is certainly the winner in this game, in every aspect apart from the price factor. The processors give almost the same performance, but Apple iPhone 4S has a superior GPU. It also has a better screen with high pixel density, which makes the text so crisp and clear, that Apple claims they even beat a printed paper. While the Huawei Honor’s TFT screen is ok, it just doesn’t come near Apple’s IPS TFT panel. Apple iPhone 4S also has a better camera with 1080p HD video capturing. Proving the user friendly nature, Apple provides the iCloud services that enable you to do a lot of cool things like porting your applications / bookmarks among Apple devices. It also has a superior battery life that differentiates the product. Well, what’s the catch then? The issue is that, the investment you need for an Apple iPhone 4S is almost as thrice as that of Huawei Honor. Such substantial difference in the prices of such similar devices should be carefully looked into. We can tell you this much, in terms of raw specifications, both of these handsets are almost equal in performance. Whatever boost Apple iPhone 4S gets, is from the iOS 5. But if you are looking for a great handset with cutting edge features for a low investment, Huawei Honor is definitely a great candidate. Apple will of course provide you a high user friendly environment for a high investment.
