Jumper, sweater, cardigan, tunic, pullover etc. are words that we commonly used for garments worn by men and women across the world. There is also jacket and jersey thrown in to confuse further the kind of garment referred to by the use of these words though it is understood that these words are used for apparels that are meant for warmth and comfort. People remains especially confused between a jumper and a cardigan because of their similarities. However, despite similar appearances, there are differences that will be talked about in this article.
Jumper
Jumper is a dress that is mostly worn by girls and ladies, and it is a unique dress that is worn overhead as it is without buttons in front. A jumper is worn over another dress that is visible through the sleeves and collar. The length of a jumper varies as it can be waist high or it may be quite long, extending up to the knees or the ankles of the user. There are people who say that the word tunic or pinafore better describes this kind of a dress.
What is called a jumper in America is seen as a sweater in Britain. We all know that a sweater is a unisex word as this knitted garment is worn by both men and women for warmth and comfort. A sweater can be made of wool, acrylic fibers, or a blend of the two. A jumper in Britain may be round neck, v-neck or even collared.
Cardigan
Cardigan is a word that is usually referred for a woolen garment that is open at the front in contrast to a pullover or a sweater that has to be worn overhead. Cardigan may have buttons, it may be zipped, or it may make use of a Velcro, but the common thread running through the design is that it should be open at the front to allow a person to wear it like a shirt and not a T-shirt or a pullover. It can be collared but mostly it is V-necked and has full sleeves. However, there are also available sleeveless cardigans in the market. Cardigan is considered more mature and dignified than jumper, and it is, therefore, seen in offices with executives donning it over their shirts.
What is the difference between Jumper and Cardigan?
• A jumper is a dress to be worn overhead over another dress, whereas cardigan is a full sleeved knitted garment that is worn over a shirt or T-shirt.
• A jumper is never open from the front, whereas a cardigan is always open at the front whether it is buttoned, zipped or closed using Velcro.
• Jumper is a word that is understood as a dress over a dress and worn by girls and ladies in US. In Britain, it refers to a pullover or sweater.
• Cardigan is mostly collarless though there are collared and sleeveless versions available in the market.
