Kurta and Sherwani are two types of apparel that show differences between them. They are indeed different from each other though they are looked upon alike by some. A kurta is a traditional kind of apparel worn by both men and women. It is usually worn in countries like Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, a sherwani is a coat like garment usually long and worn over a kurta and churidar. This is the main difference between kurta and sherwani. Of course times are fast changing. You will find that sherwani is directly worn over churidar these days. In short it can be said that sherwani is worn as a kurta these days.
It is interesting to note that shewanis are usually buttoned and they normally reach the knees when worn over kurta. As a consequence, men tend to look taller and more beautiful too when they wear sherwani. This is primarily the reason why designer sherwanis are preferred as wedding suits.
On the other hand, kurta is normally worn over with the loose-fitting pajamas or salwars. It is worn with salwars by the women and with the dhotis by the men. Women wear what is called kurti with the salwars. In fact, a kurti resembles a blouse. Kurtis are usually shorter when compared to the kurta.
It is interesting to note that the word ‘kurta’ would mean ‘a collarless shirt’, and it would have been borrowed from Urdu and Hindi, but was used in the English dictionary in the 20th century. Traditional kurtas do not have collars but modern versions do have collars. Kurtas are usually worn during summer. Sherwani is also preferred during summer. Kurtas can be worn with jeans too. These are the differences between kurta and sherwani.
