Ever since Motorola embraced Android with the launch of its Droid X in June 2010, it was clear that Motorola had finally found the platform it was going to stick to. Droid X was reasonably successful, and so it was only logical for the company to come up with its successor. On 18th of May 2011, Motorola finally announced Droid X2, which at first glance looks identical to its sibling but is packed with some advanced features. It arrives on the Verizon platform and for all of you Motorola die hard fans; here is an attempt to find out the differences between the two Droids, Motorola Droid X2 and Droid X.
Motorola Droid X
Droid X, when it came along, created quite a stir with its large touchscreen and high end features. It still is one of the biggest smartphones (some say unwieldy) available in the country. Droid X, with its 4.3” WVGA display makes a bold statement in a bevy of new generation Android based smartphones. It has striking similarities with HTC EVO, and though the styling is not as elegant as Apple’s iPhone, Droid X still has a charisma of its own. It has powerful internals to give many smartphones of the day a run for their money and a size that is sure to be a showstopper for a long time to come.
To begin with, Droid is equipped with a powerful 1 GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor and a huge 4.3” capacitive touchscreen at a resolution of 854x480pixels (still not quite bright to match the retina display of iPhone, but more than any other Android based smartphone). It has solid 512 MB RAM and an 8 MP camera with LED flash. With an internal storage of 8 GB, Droid X beats its nearest competition by quite a margin.
Though EVO was thought to be very large, Droid X is larger at 5×2.6×0.4 inches (certainly not for those with small hands). It boasts of a virtual QWERTY keyboard, which, with its SWYPE feature makes writing mails surprisingly easy. Motorola has always been concerned with call quality, and Droid X with its RFR receptor makes sure there is no external noise while talking to your friends. It is packed with a large 1570mAh battery that lasts for a whooping 9 hours of talk time. It is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and has the ability to become a mobile hotspot.
Droid X runs on Android 2.2 OS with Motorola’s latest UI called Motoblur. It has perfect social networking integration with a single click to access Google, Yahoo, FaceBook, Twitter and other accounts. For all those media hungry users, Droid X is a superb music phone, and its powerful camera not only takes razor sharp images, it also captures HD videos in 720p at 24fps. There is no secondary camera for video calling which is a bit disappointing.
Motorola Droid X2
Motorola Droid X2 has arrived with much fanfare on Verizon platform and is available on a two year contract at $200. It has a qHD display with 26% more sharp resolution, and being HDMI capable with mirroring, you can instantly watch your HD videos shot with its powerful 8 MP camera on your TV.
With full support for Adobe Flash 10.1, surfing is a breeze on Droid X2 and opening media rich content is as smooth as browsing on your PC. The screen is the same size (4.3”) as Droid X, but you would notice a sharper display with more pixels on the same screen which is scratch resistant and also impact resistant. The smartphone has a powerful 8 MP camera that is also auto focus besides having dual LED flash. Yes, it also captures HD videos in 720p.
The smartphone has full support for Google Mobile services and the user has the liberty to download from a staggering number of apps on Android’s app store. Droid X2 has a virtual QWERTY keypad coupled with SWYPE facility for easy emailing.
