Matter has three states; solid, liquid, and gas. Gas is made up of individual atoms, molecular elements of one kind of atom or a compound which is a mixture of various atoms. They are determined through their pressure, volume, temperature, and number of particles. Hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen are examples of gas.

Hydrogen is the most frequently present gas in the universe, and it is highly flammable and very light. Nitrogen is present in all living organisms and is odorless, tasteless, and colorless. Carbon is an element in gases like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. These three are components of gases such as propane and ammonia.

Propane is an alkane that consists of three carbon atoms and eight hydrogen atoms. It is the third member of the alkane series together with methane, ethane, butane, and hexane, among several others. It is a gas but can be compressed into a liquid. It is colorless, odorless, and flammable. It is a natural gas and petroleum by-product which is processed for use as fuel for stoves, torches, engines, and for heating buildings and homes. It is mixed with butane to create liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for use as fuel for vehicles.

In 1910 it was identified as a combustible element of gasoline by Dr. Walter Snelling. He later developed LPG and started the American Gasol Company and marketed propane commercially. It is processed by breaking petroleum into gasoline and heating oil and by separating ethane, butane, and propane from raw gas.

Ammonia, on the other hand, is a compound which is made up of nitrogen and hydrogen. It is an alkaline gas that is lighter than air and is characterized by a strong, pungent odor. It is also highly soluble and can be found in the atmosphere, a product of the decay process of animal and vegetable matter. It can also be found in rainwater, seawater, soil, volcanoes, and Patagonian guano. It is produced by using dry distillation on animal and vegetable waste products and coal. Ammonia is also naturally secreted by the kidneys to neutralize excess acid in the body.

It is one of the highly produced inorganic chemicals due to its many uses. The majority of ammonia produced is used in the manufacture of fertilizers for crops, nitric acid, and other nitrogenous compounds, also as a refrigerant and solvent. It is also used in the manufacture of medicines.
