Difference Between REM and NREM

REM vs NREM

After a day’s job, the body becomes shabby from all the stresses so it is necessary to have a good night’s rest. Resting restores the lost energy of the body and makes it stress-free once more. Sleeping may also be one of the best ways to have a break for the body. It is also a versatile method of revitalization and regeneration for the body. Until now, scientists cannot clarify the best reason why humans need to sleep physiologically. It’s not just “switching off” or a motionless routine of the body’s whole functions. Sleep is considered to be very crucial in many physiologic procedures of the brain like the combining of different memories and knowledge processing. Sleep is also vital to animals for survival.

Different cycles of sleep occur while the person falls into sleep. There are two, key sleep cycles that the person’s body experiences: REM and NREM. At first when the body falls asleep, he then undergoes non-rapid eye movement or known as NREM sleep. Later on, when he is in deep sleep, he continues into rapid eye movement called REM sleep. Shuddering of the eye muscles during REM sleep takes place resulting in a fast movement under the eyelids; therefore, it is named as rapid eye movement sleep. On the other hand, in non-rapid eye movement sleep, the eyes stay at rest. In most instances, NREM usually happens though the body will undertake both REM and NREM sleep cycles. REM sleep happens for two hours in a single night’s sleep while NREM sleep takes place for four to six hours.

REM may be felt during the occurrences of sleep in a single night. It is also known as “dream sleep.” It is when the brain deletes itself of unnecessary memories. During REM sleep, the body is responsive and semi-sentient about the cleaning process the brain is undergoing. So it is the reason why the person is able to state that he is dreaming. While in NREM, dreaming is likely to happen at some time, but it is in the deeper stages of sleep in which awareness is not as vibrant as REM sleep. Thus, an individual may have a tendency to forget about his dreams. In view of the fact that dreaming is occurring throughout the REM sleeping time, the brain makes use of more energy than in NREM sleep. REM is also considered a boost in brain activity and heart rate while the body is in a paralyzed state.

REM sleep functions are a psychological mending mechanism of the brain. In REM periods, the brain is quiescent from stress and revitalized. If the person is depressed and not in the right mood, it means that he lacks REM sleep. NREM is a physical repair system for the body. It is a healing course for the body in which muscle and bone building is going on and tissues restored. Lack of NREM may result in a weak immune system and a reaction to stress showing fatigue and lethargy. Despite the fact that cycles of sleep are keys for the best possible health of a person, REM and NREM have distinctions in terms of their attributes on the body during sleep.
