Difference between Rip and Burn
Any user of online media must have come across the terms ripping and burning. These are terms that relate to online media storage and conversion forms. The media referred to in ripping and burning is generally music. At face level, ripping refers to the act of moving content from a Compact Disc CD and into a computer. Ripping, in other words, is making a copy of the content in the CD into a digital format which is stored as a soft copy in the computer. Burning, on the other hand, refers to the action of taking content from the computer and placing it onto a CD.
It is important to note that the action of ripping is done so as to be able to have music from the CD stored in a computer. The ripped files are stored in an MP3 format that the computer’s default playback mechanism can play.
Burning of a CD is therefore the opposite of ripping, in that you are moving the content stored in the computer into a CD where the songs are either stored in a folder or a list, allowing playback when the burning process is completed.
One thing to note whenever dealing with ripping or even burning is the laws of the area you are in. In most places, there are very strict laws that talk of the way content should be shared. Failure to understand these could land one is serious problems with the law.
Producers of content on CDs are with each passing day becoming better and better at ensuring that their content is copyright-proof. Previously, all that was needed was just but a left clicking on the mouse pointer and you could copy all the files you desired into your computer.
One of the incentives that has been coming up in recent times is the use of the CCS encryption that makes it quite difficult to copy data from a specific file in a CD. As such, a CD or even DVD can only be used for playback. This process ensures that the owners of the content are not denied the right to earn from their content through ripped CDs and DVDs.
Ripping, however, is getting better and better with the restrictions that seem to be coming in. The ripping process will thus be customized to make sure that content can still be ripped from CDs. DVD ripping, on the other hand, refers to copying data from a DVD and saving it in different formats. This means that data can be saved in different formats that allow for playback in different devices.
Standard discs will come with easy enough features for ripping CDs and DVDs alike. However, software referred to as DVD rippers can be used to copy content for those discs that have advanced security features. Also, the rippers help in saving the software in different formats. Another feature that the ripping software offer includes is compression of files to save disk space repair of damaged sectors.
As mentioned earlier, both ripping and burning of CDs and DVDs are very highly regulated and it is therefore important to ensure that you only rip or burn content that you have legal rights to use, the failure of which you may land you in serious problems. There is a very thin line between ripping and copyright. Ripping a DVD or even CD is not an offense but removing the security features placed to prevent ripping in a disk is punishable.
