Some animals have evolved to become less dependent on the earth’s environment. One such example is the hagfish. The hagfish has a symbiotic relationship with the superoxide-generating rivularia, which excretes waste products that are oxidized and consumed by the hagfish. The rivularia cells then secrete hydrogen peroxide and an oscillatoria cell that produces oxygen gas as a byproduct of its own metabolism and turns it into water. Hagfish breathe oxygen from these two cells, and they don’t need to come in contact with water to survive.
