SLR and DSLR are two different types of the modern camera. Cameras have traditionally played an important role in keeping our memories of good times intact in the form of photographs. Times have changed and we have switched over from films to digital cameras. SLR and DSLR are two of the modern camera types that have taken over the standard point and shoot cameras that people have used for decades. Let us see the difference between these two types of cameras.

SLR stands for single lens reflex and DSLR refers to digital single lens reflex camera. These cameras came into existence because of an age old problem that persisted in photography. The actual print was always different (somewhat) from what a photographer saw in his view finder. Cameras used to have two light paths, one that went to the lens while the other went to the viewfinder. This meant a slight difference in the actual photo that you finally printed. SLR cameras sought to fix this problem by letting a photographer see through the lens. You get the print that is exactly the same as you see from the viewfinder in this system. After you are happy with the photo, you press the shutter which causes the light to hit the film behind the lens. Because of this advantage over simple point and shoot cameras, SLR cameras are used by photographers in situations where they want the best from their photos.

DSLR cameras are basically SLR that allow the image to be saved, not on the film, but on a memory card. Thus they have most of the features of a SLR camera plus this advantage. Latest DSLR have some more features and controls that allow for better image quality than SLR cameras. With passage of time, the storage capacity and the quality of the sensor of the cameras has been increasing which means not only better quality images but also freedom from frequently changing memory cards. Today, a DSLR has become indispensable for professional photographers.
