Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and Xperia Play are two new releases in 2011. For all those who were in stunned silence after the launch of Xperia Arc from Sony Ericsson which was one of the world’s thinnest smartphones with a large display using mobile Bravia engine and an excellent 8.1MP camera with Sony’s Exmor R mobile sensor, here is another product that was only in the realms of fantasy until now. Xperia Play has been launched which combines the capabilities of a smartphone with the gaming experience of Playstation. There are many similarities between these two smartphones, but there are glaring differences that will be highlighted in this article.

Xperia Play

If you dreamt of having a smartphone that also gave you the thrill of video gaming like a Playstation, here is Xperia Play to fulfill all your desires. This is a Playstation certified android based device that gives you unlimited gaming pleasure while at the same time providing you all the latest features of a smartphone. The phone has a real game controller to provide non stop entertainment along with an analog joystick.

As it is being promoted as a gaming phone, the standout feature is of course the slide out game controller with all the standard controls and buttons found on play station. However, there are other features that put this amazing device in the category of smartphones. The 4 inch touch screen has a resolution of 480 x 854 with LCD TFT technology to provide an excellent gaming experience. The phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, has a powerful 1 GHz snapdragon processor with Adreno 205 graphic processor and boasts of 512 MB RAM. That’s not all as there is Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and a 5 MP camera to boot, with a pinch to zoom function that is pleasing to use.

One cannot compare its dimensions with other smartphones as it is packed with features of a play station and so the measurements of 119 x 16.5 x 62 mm are nothing less than a miracle. It weighs a chubby 175 gm, but gaming freaks won’t mind as they are also getting to use a smartphone. The camera is a good 5 MP, it does not record videos in HD. For connectivity, there is quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 3G-UMTS/HSPA,  Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, and yes Micro USB 2.0.

Sony has stunned the world by bringing out Xperia Arc, arguably one of the thinnest smartphone in the world today. Sony has given up its penchant for rather bulky phones in the middle, and Xperia Arc is a wafer thin smartphone with curvy architecture, standing at 8.7mm at the centre and 9mm at the thickest edges. This phone runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is powered with a powerful 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM 8255 processor and Adreno 205 graphics processor. It has 512 MB of RAM with an 8GB of internal storage courtesy micro SD card and has an 8 MP camera capable of recording HD videos and has Sony’s Exmor R mobile sensor. The striking feature of the phone is its huge 4.2 inch LED back-lit display with mobile Bravia engine, the TV technology brought to a mobile device, at a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. The screens colors are very natural and bright. It has HDMI out that allows the user to watch HD videos captured from its camera instantly on TV.
