PS3 and PS3 Slim are two versions of the Playstation from Sony. Sony Playstation is perhaps the most popular gaming console in the world and with recent launching of a slim version of the console, aptly called PS3 by Sony has created a buzz among the lovers of video games. Is there any difference between Sony Playstation 3 and PS3 Slim apart from of course the dimensions, or is it just another marketing gimmick by the manufacturer. Let us find out the features and pros and cons of the two devices to make it easier for a gaming freak to decide which one suits his requirements better.
1. Change in dimensions
A close look at the two devices and it is clear to anyone that Sony has indeed made some hardware repackaging as PS3 Slim is really very thin in comparison to Sony Playstation 3. In fact, if you look at the dimension, PS3 Slim is 33% shorter and also 33% lighter than its predecessor making it a very compact gaming console. Thankfully, PS3 Slim can now be clubbed with other gaming consoles that are as slim as this console as earlier Playstation 3 really looked like a big daddy when kept next to Xbox and Nintendo gaming devices.
But because of its slimness, PS3 Slim cannot stand on it’s own and this is why the user has to buy an optional stand to make his console stand easily with its support. I don’t think you can take a risk of trying to make it stand on its own when there is a $24 stand available, isn’t it?
2. Power consumption
This is not to say that there is no difference with its bigger cousin as Sony has made PS3 Slim a spendthrift as far consuming power is concerned. Using a 45nm cell processor, PS3 Slim eats only half as much power as Playstation 3. Along with this is the related fact of heat. As PS3 slim consumes less power, it also does not heat up and thus you need not resort to cooling the machine which was the case with Playstation 3. PS3 Slim also makes less noise than Playstation
3. Higher capacity hard drive
Sony Playstation 3 had a hard drive of 80 GB only while PS3 Slim has a bigger hard drive with 120 GB. This obviously translates into ability to score more games.
4. Other
Another noticeable difference is in the finish of the product. While Sony Playstation had a glossy finish, it obviously meant it was full of finger prints in a short period of time. PS3 Slim however has a matte finish which means that it stays clean for a longer time period.
One difference that many fail to notice despite playing on both the versions is that in PS3 Slim the player cannot install Linux OS. This was possible in Sony Playstation 3 which made it work just like a computer. However, this is not noticeable as a vast majority of players never make use of this facility.
