Sore Throat vs Strep Throat
There are moments in our lives when we have such terrible pain, particularly in our mouth or throat area. During such times, we hardly have any voice, feel sick, feel irritable, cannot swallow, and other symptoms. We feel like resting for days and not working as we feel terrible becoming sick.
During these moments, we think we might have a sore throat or strep throat since we had these when we were kids. But what is the difference between a sore throat or strep throat? Let us find out.
Strep throat is a kind of sore throat caused mainly by the Streptoccocus bacteria. In particular, this bacteria is the Streptoccocus pyogenes which is classified under group A Streptoccocus bacteria. Strep throat has other names such as Streptoccocal pharyngitis or Streptoccocal sore throat.
A sore throat, on the other hand, is a layman’s term for the throat that is quite painful, tender, and scratchy. It is a general term when we feel like we have a sore throat in which we can hardly swallow or feel like getting sick or having a fever. Sore throats can be caused by many organisms whether they are bacterias or viruses, while strep throat is solely caused by bacteria. A sore throat can be caused by viruses, fungi, and other types of microbes. Strep throat is only caused by bacteria.
Strep throat is very contagious unlike a sore throat. Strep throat can quickly spread among people since this condition is an airborne condition. It can be spread from contact with door knobs, chairs, tables, and many other items. If you do not practice hand washing, then chances are you can get it easily. With a sore throat, however, there are varying instances in which it can be transmitted but much less contagious than strep throat. However, taking precautions is still advised.
Strep throat is treated with antibacterials or antibiotics. A sore throat is treated depending on the type of organism that caused the disease.
